From 6–7 p.m., enjoy light hors d’oeuvres before settling in for a captivating conversation moderated by acclaimed local author Katie Dohman.
Together, they’ll delve into Mary’s newly released memoir, What Doesn’t Kill Me Makes Me Weirder and Harder to Relate To—a sharp, darkly funny, and unflinchingly honest account of fame, fear, reinvention, and resilience.
A beloved cultural force in the Twin Cities, Mary Lucia is a celebrated broadcast personality, writer, actor, and voiceover artist. Known for her fearless style, wit, and encyclopedic music knowledge, she shaped the airwaves at The Current from 2005 to 2022, hosted the award-winning Popular Creeps, and was named City Pages’ Best FM Radio Personality seven times. She now lends her vision and voice as the program advisor at the University of Minnesota’s Radio K.
Mary’s memoir traces her rise as an irreverent rock DJ—and the harrowing obsession that threatened her life. With her trademark intelligence and razor-sharp humor, she recounts navigating terror amid the surreal normalcy of interviewing rock legends, curating playlists, judging high school bands, and battling addiction. She brings readers into the chaos, joy, and strangeness of her life: an eccentric childhood, grief, music, dogs, profoundly odd encounters, and her own hard-won clarity.
What Doesn’t Kill Me Makes Me Weirder and Harder to Relate To is Mary at her boldest: idiosyncratic, vulnerable, and unexpectedly relatable.
This is a rare chance to experience Mary Lucia up close—raw, brilliant, and utterly herself. We hope you’ll join us.
